Worms Battlegrounds is a Worms game released on May 30, 2014 in EU and June 3, 2014 in the US on PSN/Xbox Live Arcade along with a retail version. It has been described to be the biggest entry ever yet in the series. The game is available in English (US), French, Spanish, German and Italian. May 19, 2014 Worms™ Battlegrounds will be the among the first titles to be released under ID@Xbox, Microsoft's new program enabling independent game developers of all.
The pedigree is impressive to say the least. Over 20 titles with releases on 25 different platforms, multiple prestigious awards, including 'Most Original Game' and 'Game of the Year' wins from various outlets, and a cult-like following within the game community.
Team 17 is about to add to the list of platforms on which they have published games and bring Worms to the new generation with. Whether or not they can add to the list of awards and attract a new generation of gamers will be determined this summer.Worms Battleground will have a familiar feel to fans of the series as it will stick to the 2D, turn-based gameplay that has been the bread and butter of this series since 1995. There have been a handful of titles in the series that have deviated from this, but the 2D titles have been the most well-received. Team 17 highlighted the familiar feel of the series in some newly released screenshots of the upcoming release. If you have played other Worms titles, you will recognize many of the weapons shown in the screenshots such as the Ninja Kick, the Sheep, and my personal favorite, the Holy Hand Grenade. The game will have a stacked-out armory featuring 65 weapons.

Most of the favorites from previous titles will be back, but Worms Battleground will also introduce 10 new weapons to the franchise. They are: Mega Mortar, Gravedigger, Winged Monkey, Oxygen, Worm Charm, Bovine Blitz, Whoopsie Cushion, Teleport Gun, Aqua Pack, and The Equalizer. Team 17 did not release any detail about how these weapons work or how much carnage they can produce. However, fans of the series will no doubt be able to take some educated guesses based simply on the names of the new weapons. If you watch the trailer closely, you may just catch a glimpse of a new weapon here and there. Part of the Worms experience has always been the destructible environments. This new installment in the series will feature 25 single-player missions and 10 'Worm-Ops' (time attack mission) spread over five new environments.
The environments will all have day to night lighting transitions and are titled: Inca, Viking, Feudal Japan, Industrial Revolution, and Prehistoric. The developer has also announced that gamers will be able to enjoy these environments in full 1080p running at 60fps. Also, if you need to exercise the creative side of your brain, a landscape editor will be included. If you're into obliterating worms with your friends, don't worry because Worms Battleground will have both online and local multiplayer with support for up to four players. Further enhancing the multiplayer experience is the inclusion of clan support that will feature a clan emblem editor, and individualizing your squad will be better than ever with over 200 customization items at your disposal.Team 17 is also looking to integrate some of the new generation's gadgets by offering a SmartGlass companion app.
No details were given on exactly what features that will bring to the table other than the fact that it will include stat tracking. Interestingly, there was no mention of Kinect integration in the press release.Aside from the details of the game itself, Worms Battleground is a bit of a hallmark release for Microsoft and Xbox One as it is one of the first titles to be released under Microsoft's ID@Xbox program. This is part of Microsoft's new effort to enable and empower independent game developers by allowing them to self-produce and publish games digitally on the Xbox One.
